Conservation on Ottawa Waterways
The OFS Embraces Conservation
One of the major objectives of the Ottawa Flyfishers Society, perhaps second only to fly fishing itself, is the preservation and enhancement of fish habitats. In this regard, the Society actively supports sustainable fishing practices, such as catch-and-release fishing and the use of barbless hooks, and reinforces this through presentations, discussions, and education. Members are also encouraged to volunteer and otherwise participate in some of the many conservation activities mentioned briefly below.
Partnerships in Conservation
A principal thrust, in partnership with the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, has focused on participation and leadership in the formation and ongoing management of the City Stream Watch Program (CSW) and the related Adopt-a-Stream Program (AaS). These programs involve the recruitment, training, and participation of volunteers in the surveying and management of streams in the Ottawa area. The program is recognized as a major conservation achievement and has since been expanded to include both South Nation and Mississippi Valley.
Conservation Activites
Since its inception, the Society has been involved in a wide variety of conservation activities. In this regard Ottawa Flyfishers has established and maintained active partnerships with the three neighbouring Conservation Authorities: Rideau Valley, South Nation, and Mississippi Valley and in conjunction with them have successfully undertaken a large number of projects.
South Nation Conservation Youth Fish Camps
The Society also partners with South Nation Conservation through ongoing representation on its Fish and Wildlife Committee along with various other projects such as participation in its annual Youth Fish Camp. Briefly, SNC Youth Fish Camp provides an opportunity each year for as many as seventy-five young people to learn about and experience the sport of fishing, including fly fishing and tying, along with the importance of conservation.
